Wash, Learn, Repeat: Fall Conference Highlights
MLA President Denise Savino-Erichsen warmly welcomed attendees to the sun-soaked desert of Palm Springs for her first meeting as association president. Under bright blue skies and surrounded by the stunning, expansive desert views, attendees enjoyed top-notch service at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage. The warm desert sun set the perfect tone for an inspiring and engaging conference experience.
Friday morning, Rena Somersan, Managing Principal at Newport, an Ascensus Company, led an engaging session titled “What the Heck is Going on with Compensation!?!” exploring today’s evolving compensation landscape and what it takes to attract and retain top talent.
Somersan shared insights from Newport’s 2025–2026 Compensation and Benefits Trends Survey, highlighting that salary increase budgets are moderating amid economic uncertainty, with most organizations targeting 3% raises and focusing on aligning pay with market competitiveness.
Somersan encouraged attendees to think beyond traditional pay by developing a Total Rewards Philosophy that encompasses compensation, benefits, work-life effectiveness, and performance management. Examples from leading companies included creative perks such as four-day workweeks, volunteer time off, lifestyle accounts, wellness apps, and travel discounts—all designed to strengthen engagement and retention. Her key takeaway: organizations that take a holistic, people-centered approach to rewards will be better positioned to attract, motivate, and keep top talent in today’s competitive market.
Saturday morning, attendees explored the powerful concept of “Customers for Life: A Path to Increased Value Through Investing in Your People" with former MLA member, Bob Doyle, CEO/Owner, TAB Certified StratPro Facilitator and Executive Business Coach.
The session centered on the simple but transformative idea that motivated, long-term employees create better customer experiences, driving stronger performance and profitability. The discussion emphasized that people are a company’s greatest asset, and leaders have a responsibility to cultivate a workplace where employees feel respected, valued, and heard. Participants learned practical strategies to define and strengthen company culture, hire and retain the right people, build effective teams, enhance communication, and invest wisely in compensation and recognition programs. Even without major financial overhauls, thoughtful investment in people can significantly elevate both employee satisfaction and customer loyalty.
Saturday evening, attendees gathered for a memorable evening outdoors under the desert sky at the Palm Springs Surf Club, where a lively DJ set the mood with upbeat tunes. Guests mingled and networked poolside as surfers carved waves illuminated against the night sky. MLA's allied member dinner sponsors added to the ambiance, with their logos glowing in lights beside the wave pool, creating a uniquely Palm Springs atmosphere that perfectly blended relaxation, connection, and fun.
